Tikkurila Valtti Opaque (formally known as the Finngard Opaque)
The Valtti Opaque is highly durable universal semi-matt low-odour alkyd acrylate paint for use on exterior masonry and timber surfaces. It provides exceptional weather resistance, flexibility and an extremely durable low-maintenance finish. Moisture regulating and will not crack, peel or blister.
It is ideal for coating and redecorating:
- Rendered walls,
- Masonry, brick and block work
- Timber cladding and weatherboarding
- Windows and Doors
- Log cabins
- Fencing, sheds and garden furniture.
Finngard Opaque can be used for repainting surfaces previously coated with alkyd paint or wood stains.
Surface Preparation - Masonry Surfaces.
Surfaces must be clean, dry, and free from grease, dirt, oil, wax, rust, loose material and surface contamination.
Repair cracks, holes and surface defects using high quality fillers such as Prestonett Exterior Filler. Remove any surface contamination and dirt by using a cleaner degreaser.
Remove any signs of mould growth by using a mould removal solution, following manufacturers instructions.
Porous and powdery surfaces should first be treated with a penetrating sealer such as Tikkurila Hydrosol to provide a sound surface to coating.
Surface Preparation - Timber Surfaces.
Surfaces must be clean, dry, and free from grease, dirt, oil, wax, rust, loose material and surface contamination. Use Tikkurila mould removal and cleaning products.
Treat knots and resinous areas with Tikkurila Knotting Lacquer. Use high quality fillers for filling cracks, nail holes, blemishes, etc.
Ensure that existing glossy, gloss painted and filled surfaces are thoroughly sanded.
Make sure that timber cladding, weatherboarding and timber glazing beads, etc. are adequately fastened with non-corrosive fixings.
Note: Discoloration of paint especially noticeable within light colours may occur over knots and resinous areas present in the wood. Particular attention with regards to preparation should be given to wood such as Oak, Teak, Cedar, Douglas Fir, Mahogany and Idigbo, etc., which contain oil and water-soluble tannin which may impair the drying, hardening or adhesion of surface coatings and discolour the finished surface.
Prime new bare wood overall and spot prime all bare areas on previously painted wood with Valtti Base Priming Oil.
Use Otex Adhesion Primer on wood that contains substances which may ‘bleed through’ and cause staining to the finished surface. Prime all bare metal and potential rust spots with Otex Primer or Rostex Super.
Note: A priming coat of Valtti Base should be applied to all exterior wood which has not been pre-treated or vacuum impregnated with an approved preservative. Apply liberally on end-grain.
