How to Paint Your Flooring

Your Home Magazine, Ask the Experts Feature, September 2016

Reader Question:
I’m going for a monochrome scheme in my dining room and would like to paint the floorboards black- what sort of paint should I use, and do you have any top tips?

Holman Specialist Paints has these Top Tips:

Painting floorboards is a fantastic way to completely change the look and feel of any room, without the often extortionate costs of putting down new flooring.

As with any painting job, it’s important to prepare your surface. Often the trick of a beautiful finish is putting the time into the preparation. Make sure that floorboards are thoroughly clean, dry and have been sanded down, and fill any holes or cracks to prevent any imperfections.

You can completely revamp your floorboards in a few different ways, depending on the effect you wish to achieve. So, it’s important to consider whether you want a semi-transparent finish to still see some of the wood, or an opaque finish to achieve a solid colour.

For a glamorous semi-transparent finish, we can’t rave enough about the beautiful results of the Tikkurila Parquet Floor Stain. By staining floorboards you can create the richness of the colour you desire while at the same time enhancing the natural beauty and grain of the timber. As with all stains, applying a second will darken the colour – so if the black isn’t quite the colour you want on first application add a second for a more opaque finish. Protect it with a coat of Tikkurila Parquet Floor Lacquer to make sure your flooring stays in good condition.

Or alternatively, for a solid and exceptional opaque floor finish, try using the Betolux Akva Floor Paint- also by Tikkurila – a water-borne, interior floor paint that can be tinted to any colour. It is extremely durable and comes in a semi-gloss finish.

Creating a black floor is a very bold statement, but when done well, can look incredibly striking. We can tint these floor coatings to any colour you could wish for, so why not unleash your dark side?

Tikkurila Parquet Floor Stain is a low solvent, low odour stain for timber floors. Overcoat and protect with Parquet Floor Lacquer.

Apply by brush, and over coat with the Tikkurila Parquet Floor Lacquer for the best protection and durability.
