--------------------------

Surface Preparation

Before proceeding with your coating system, ensure that the moisture content of the timber does not exceed 18%.

Ensure the timber surface is abraded, clean, and dry and is free from dust, dirt, wax and grease. Ensure to remove any existing surface mould and/or algae using a fungicidal solution.

Any resinous residues may be removed using a suitable solvent or methylated spirit. Knotting solution may be used to reduce extractive discolouration, however, knotting solutions are not always effective in 'sealing in' the resin.

------------------------

Application of Sikkens Cetol Novatech onto New Woodwork or Timber

If applying to new woodwork apply 2 coats of the Sikkens Cetol Novatech.

Or, alternatively, for windows and door joinery, you can also apply 1 coat of Cetol Novatech followed by 1 coat of Cetol Novatop

Due to the excellent penetration properties of the Cetol Novatech the first coat can entirely disappear into the wood. This will depend on the type of timber, and porosity of the surface.

Allow for 16 hours between coats. For best results, keep the interval between applications of the coats as short as possible.

Where possible, the first coat should be applied to all parts of the component prior to fixing. Apply in a well ventilated area.

Note: Discoloration of paint especially noticeable within light colours may occur over knots and resinous areas present in the wood. Particular attention with regards to preparation should be given to wood such as Oak, Teak, Cedar, Douglas Fir, Mahogany and Idigbo, etc., which contain oil and water-soluble tannin which may impair the drying, hardening or adhesion of surface coatings and discolour the finished surface.

----------------------------

Maintenance of Sikkens Cetol Novatech

For best results, it is recommended that the Sikkens Cetol Novatech is reapplied every 2-3 years.

When looking to maintain the coating, take note of the current condition of the finish. Then clean, degrease and sand to create a key. If excessive weathering has occurred leaving a grey appearance, the surface must be abraded back to clean bare timber before recoating.

Repair any defects and apply two caots of the Sikkens Cetol Novatech.

As with any semi-transparent colour, coating or stain, the more coats you apply the darker the shade becomes. Therefore it is recommended that in order to maintain the translucent appearance of the Cetol Novatech over a longer period, to use light colours 077 or 006 for maintenance applications.

For maintenance applications, the same drying times and application instructions are applicable.

------------------------

Damaged and Decayed Timber

All damaged or decayed timber must be removed and replaced before any coatings application. If looking to remove damaged/decayed timber, cut at least 25mm into sound timber. When splicing in new sections of wood, consider whether the timber species' natural durability is sufficient.

Ensure to thoroughly treat timbers, especially in any end grain sections and ensure all materials are fully dry before splicing in. Secure with non-ferrous fixings and fill any surrounding voids with a good quality wood filler.

----------------------------

Previously Coated Surfaces

De-nib using a fine grade nylon abrasive pad or a fine grade (P240 or finer) wet or dry silicon carbide abrasive paper, in the direction of the grain. Do not break through the surface coating. Remove all dust.

Where there is localised damage, or deterioration has occurred as a result of exposure of the factory coating for longer than 3 months affected areas should be thoroughly sanded back to a sound substrate.

Further Notes:

Joinery should be glazed with a suitable sealant in accordance with section 4.2 of the Glass and Glazing Federation manual together with BS 8000-7 : 1990 Workmanship on Building Sites and BS 6262 : 1982.

Linseed oil putty, type II butyl mastics and metal casement putty are not recommended for use.

When choosing a semi-transparent wood stain shade for exterior timber, lighter colours of translucent products are always less durable due to the impact of UV damage.

We never recommend a 'clear' version of this product, as this will not offer adequate protection of exterior timber.

The final colour of a semi-transparent stain will always depend on the colour of the timber underneath, and the amount of coats applied. The more coats applied the darker and more solid the colour. For best results, always do a test patch before applying to the whole area.
